Our Approach

Hardscape Built for New England's Climate

Every patio we build begins with the land itself. We study the grade, the drainage patterns, the soil conditions, and the way light falls across your property at different hours. This is not decorative work — it is structural design that must perform through Massachusetts winters, where 30 to 40 freeze-thaw cycles each year generate enough force to destroy improperly installed hardscape from below.

The Process

From Vision to Finished Stone

Step 01

Site Assessment

We evaluate your property's grade, soil composition, existing drainage, and architectural context. In MetroWest towns where many properties border wetlands, we also determine whether the work falls within the 100-foot buffer zone or 200-foot riverfront area that would require conservation commission review.

Step 02

Design & Material Selection

Collaborative design sessions where you choose materials, patterns, and layout. We present material samples on-site so you can see how bluestone, granite, or pavers look against your home's exterior in natural light. Every material is specified for freeze-thaw durability in New England's climate.

Step 03

Excavation & Base Preparation

Precision excavation followed by compacted gravel base installation. Massachusetts frost depth reaches 48 inches, and New England's glacial till soils demand proper base construction. We install a minimum compacted aggregate base with geotextile fabric separation — this hidden foundation is what separates a patio that lasts decades from one that heaves in the first winter.

Step 04

Stone Setting

Each paver or stone is hand-set to exacting tolerances. Our masons maintain consistent joint widths and ensure proper pitch — a minimum 2% slope — for water management away from your home's foundation. Proper pitch prevents the water pooling that drives freeze-thaw damage.

Finishing & Protection

Polymeric sand joints lock pavers in place, resist washout, and prevent weed growth. Steel or aluminum edge restraints contain the system. We walk you through seasonal maintenance — including the importance of avoiding sodium chloride de-icers on natural stone — and provide a written care guide specific to your materials.

"The Santucci team understood what we wanted before we could articulate it ourselves. They walked our property, studied the house, and came back with a design that felt like it had always been there. Three years later, it still takes our breath away."

Walkways & Paths

The Art of Getting There

A walkway is not merely a route between two points — it is a sequence of experiences. The width narrows as it passes through a garden gate, encouraging a moment of pause. It widens into a landing at a viewpoint. The material shifts from formal cut stone near the house to irregular flagstone as it approaches the garden, signaling a transition from architecture to nature.
